ll of Arnaldo Calveyra’s texts (1929-2015, argentine poet, resident in France from 1960 to this death) resonate with “rhythms of the present”, even if there text were written thirty years before publishing. In these exercises with time, the urgency of “taking note of the instant” is combined with his need of rendering remote geographies as well as more everyday spaces; the need of rendering time in its cyclical flow but also, as if they were an exercise of memory, the need for “pinning” or crystallizing times that have been lived as if they were out of time, such as time spent on a job in an old port, described in Journal of a rat exterminator. One last aspect needs to be also considered: the thirty-year gap between writing and publishing, which distorts even further the relation to time. This article intends to analyze the way in which Calveyra uses chronicles in order to decipher time – chronicles that he confronts with picturesque narratives, with travelling logbooks and in particular with Chronicles of the Indies – in order to produce not only a narrative on the works and days of the poet/rat exterminator, but also, and more importantly, to produce meta-reflection and consider writing as a practice in itself. The blurring of genres and the role of tradition are also examined, especially considering that it is possible to read this poetry book by replacing the word “rat” by the word “poetry”.
