La providence entre judaïsme hellénisé et judaïsme rabbinique

Résumé

Our article deals with the notion of divine providence and compares its place and role within two different forms of Judaism, namely Hellenistic Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism. In Hellenistic Judaism, providence is called pronoia. This term may be found within Flavius Josephus’ and Philo’s works. It is also mentioned by ten inscriptions from the Sardis synagogue. As the notion of providence is shared by the Bible and Greek religion or philosophy, it helps to consolidate the identity of Hellenistic Jews and allows them to be both Jew and Greek without contradiction. It is also addressed by ancient rabbis, but in a more ambiguous way. This ambiguity was overlooked by one of the most famous scholars in the field of aggadic studies, Ephraim Urbach. Of course, the rabbis were familiar with the idea of providence, but they never used the Greek term pronoia and they did not have an equivalent Hebrew term either. The ambivalent attitude of the rabbis may be explained by the existence of differences between rabbinic and Hellenistic or Judeo-Hellenistic conceptions of providence. It is possible however that the similarities between both conceptions were even more problematic in the eyes of the rabbis, so that they preferred not to emphasize such an embarrassing confluence.
